Summer in France - day 8: St. Guilhem-le-Désert and Pont du Diable
Today we leave Puichéric and drive to Eygalières, a little west of Arles.
By noon we are in Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert, a medieval monastery village on the route to Santiago de Compostela. (Do you see the typical shell in the wall in front of the monastery? Which points to the Jacob Route.)
Charlemagne gave the monastery a splinter from the cross of Christ. This relic ensures that the village is one of the most important stops on the road to Compostela.
It is a very cozy village, but quite crowded by tourists. There are a few large car parks, all with a fixed daily rate.
There are nice shops in the well-preserved medieval houses, in the small alleys connected to the square near the abbey. The pilgrimage route runs along.
