Even if you get regular GYN care, bladder cancer might not be on your radar. According to the CDC, it is far more common among men than women, and the vast majority of cases occur in people over 65. On the other hand, the stats should not deter you from learning how to identify the warning signs.
In the United States, only about 18,000 women are diagnosed with bladder cancer each year (CDC – Bladder Cancer), making it one of the rarest cancers in women. Women are more likely to be diagnosed at an advanced stage because they may not be aware of early warning signs when it comes to bladder cancer.
Women's Bladder Cancer Facts
However, it's essential to understand how women are uniquely affected by bladder cancer and why it's critical not to overlook it.
50% of cases are diagnosed while the cancer is still present within the bladder. Because symptoms are often overlooked in women, this percentage is lower.
• According to the American Cancer Society's Key Statistics for Bladder Cancer, women have a 1-in-89 chance of developing bladder cancer in their lifetime. However, the incidence of bladder cancer in women is increasing.
• Bladder cancer is most common in people over the age of 55, so be on the lookout for early signs of the disease as you age.
• The recurrence rate of bladder cancer is high. After being diagnosed with bladder cancer, regular examinations are necessary in case of a recurrence.
Bladder Cancer Symptoms in Women
A better prognosis could be achieved by being aware of the warning signs and symptoms. Here are five things to keep an eye on:
Blood in Urine
As the most common and first-detected sign of bladder cancer, this is the most common early disease symptom. It's easy for women to overlook because it's usually painless and can last for weeks or months at a time. A common misconception about this symptom is that menstruation or menopause is to blame. Your best bet is to seek the advice of a urologist if you are unsure if something is wrong.
Symptoms resemble those of a urinary tract infection
Many of the symptoms of bladder cancer and a urinary tract infection (UTI) are similar. In some cases, patients may notice an increase in frequency and urgency of urination, as well as pain associated with urination. Several symptoms can indicate a UTI, including frequent urination, difficulty emptying your bladder, and a lack of relief from antibiotics. If any of these apply to you, you should see a doctor as soon as possible.
Pain that is not related to any known medical condition
Pain is a common symptom of more advanced bladder cancers. Flanking, abdominal, or pelvic pain are all possibilities. If cancer has spread to the bones, patients may also experience pain in their bones. Tell your doctor if you're experiencing pain or spotting in those areas, especially if you've also noticed symptoms of a urinary tract infection.
A decrease in hunger
Bladder cancer is no exception to the rule for a common cancer symptom: loss of appetite. Symptoms of cancer progression include weight loss and exhaustion. Don't assume the worst, but if the problem persists, see your doctor.
Bladder Cancer Risk Factors
As far as bladder cancer is concerned, smoking is by far the most common risk factor. Women diagnosed with bladder cancer are more likely to be smokers than non-smokers. Smokers are more likely to experience any of the above symptoms, so see your doctor right away if you notice any of them.
Having had bladder cancer in the past is a significant additional risk factor. Bladder cancer has the highest recurrence rate (50–80 percent). If you've had bladder cancer in the past, you must continue to see your doctor and be on the lookout for any signs of the disease.
