Five times earlier in history, the Earth was hit by a massive extinction of plant and animal species, a so-called mass extinction. A mass extinction or mass extinction is the global extinction of many types of organisms in a relatively short period of time.

Based on the decline in biodiversity over the past 500 years, scientists are now warning that we are on the verge of a sixth wave.
