FREE Crochet Pattern - Cacti & Succulents (part 2)

Hi again!
I’m glad you made it to part two of my cacti & succulents crochet pattern. In this part we are going to make a succulent, namely an Aloe Vera.

So here we go with part two of the English version of my cacti & succulents pattern (the original Dutch version of the pattern can be found here).

Aloe Vera

Supplies

Yarn in a darker and lighter color green, I used acrylic worsted weight yarn
Crochet hook size E (3,5 mm)
A large tapestry needle

Note: When crocheting around the leaves be sure to crochet over any loose threads, this way you don’t have to weave in so many yarn ends.

Tante Koek (a.k.a. Aunt Cookie)

Skill level

You need to know how to crochet a chain and single crochets.
You need to be able to increase and decrease.
The pattern is suitable for beginners, but if you have any questions don’t hesitate to ask them.

Abbreviations

ST = stitch
CH = chain
SC = single crochet
Sc2tog = single crochet decrease, single crochet two together

Aloe Vera is used in many skin products... but not this kind of Aloe Vera.

Small leave (make 2):

1.       With the lighter green: ch3
2.       Starting in second chain from your hook, work 1sc in each st, ch1 and turn (2)
3.       Work 2sc in first st, 1sc in next st, ch1 and turn (3)
4.       Work 2sc in first st, 1sc in next 2st, ch1 and turn (4)
5.       Work 1sc in each st, ch1 and turn (4)
6.       Work 1sc in each st, ch1 and turn (4)
7.       Sc2tog, work 1sc in next 2st, ch1 and turn (3)
8.       Sc2tog, work 1sc in next st, ch1 and turn (2)
9.       Sc2tog (1)
Fasten off

Medium size leave (make 2):

1.       With the lighter green: ch4
2.       Starting in second chain from your hook, work 1sc in each st, ch1 and turn (3)
3.       Work 1sc in each st, ch1 and turn (3)

The leaves will look like this, and you will have two of each.

Now we’re going to crochet around the leaves with the darker green color. If you crochet over the loose threads you will have less yarn ends to weave in later.

Start at the bottom right side (photo 1). Insert your hook an pull up the darker green yarn, fasten it with a slip stitch and work a sc in the same space. Crochet around the side of the leave with single crochets. When you reach the top of the leave work 1sc, ch1 and 1sc in the same space (photo 2), now work your way back down the others side of the leave. Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing the Aloe Vera together.

1. Start with the dark green yarn in this space.

2. Work 1sc, ch1, 1sc in the top space

3. The finished leaves

You now have a total of 6 leaves in three different sizes as shown in this picture.
Using the large tapestry needle you can sew the bottom parts of the leaves together. Make sure that the small leaves are in the inside of the plant and the large leaves are on the outside.

When you’re done you will have a plant that looks somewhat like this one. Not every plant will look exactly the same, but it’s like that in real life too. :)
