Tanzania confident on $6 billion tourism revenue target

Tanzania is optimistic it will reach its $6 billion tourist income target by 2025.
In that year, the industry will reach its aim of five million annual arrivals.
Natural Resources and Tourism Minister Pindi Chana expects 5 million tourists a year.

After two years of reduced development owing to Covid-19, she added international tourist numbers are encouraging.

Diversifying tourism destinations and introducing new items will help reach the 5-million-tourist objective.

She said deliberate actions will target the Mice section.

After dipping to 600,000 in 2020 from 1.5 million in 2019, then increasing to 900,000 last year, there are hints that Tanzania's tourism will top one million this year (2022).

From January to May, the number of visits rose 44% from 317,270 to 458,048.

Dr. Chana spoke during a media briefing of the sixth Swahili International Tourism Expo in October. The October 21-23 exhibition in Mlimani City will draw 200 local exhibitors and 300 foreign customers.

The 2020 and 2021 Expos won't be conducted since the epidemic nearly knocked the major FX industry to its knees.

In 2014, there were 40 exhibitors and 24 international purchasers; in 2019, there were 170 and 333.

Dr. Chana said the Swahili Expo is one of the government's tourist projects.

Mice is one of the important goods that would boost tourism, she added.

The Swahili International Tourism Expo connects local and international industry participants.

Dr. Chana said this year's event will feature an investment forum for foreign exhibitors.

The minister identified Ngorongoro-Lengai geo-park as another tourism commodity to advertise.

Oldonyo-Lengai is the geopark's main attraction, albeit it includes Ngorongoro, Karatu, Monduli, and Longido.

The 3,188-meter active volcano north of Ngorongoro Crater attracts thousands of tourists each.

Unesco recently confirmed the site's elevation to an international geopark.

Acting TTB MD Felix John said the board is aggressively marketing tourism spots.
