Making a top with the best, from any field, is always difficult.
Now if we talk about the sports world, although the logic initially says that we just need to go to the numbers and see the lists of winners of the main tournaments, this would be just a way to make a classification, in the best cases, only quantitatively.
When making a top of athletes, quantitative aspects (victories, trophies, recognitions) always play a role, but also qualitative aspects (technique, appearance, individual quality) and even incidental aspects (injuries, accidents) must be taken into account.
Taking all this into account, below we propose the five cyclists who, in the opinion of various experts in this field, are considered the best of all time:
1 Eddy Merckx (Belgium)
Considered by the vast majority as the best cyclist of all time because of his multiple triumphs in the most important competitions in world cycling: the three major rounds (Tour de France, Giro d'Italia and the Tour of Spain) and the World Cup. specialty.
In 1974 he won the so-called Triple Crown of cycling: he won the Giro d'Italia, the Tour de France and the World Road Cycling Championship in Montreal, Canada.
In total, he won five times the Giro d'Italia (1968, 1970, 1972, 1973 and 1974); five triumphs at the Tour de France (1969, 1970, 1971, 1972 and 1974); three World Road Cycling Championships (Heerlen, Netherlands, 1967; Mendrisio, Switzerland, 1971 and Montreal, Canada, 1974); and the victory during his only participation in the Vuelta a España, in 1973.
2 Jacques Anquetil (France)
He won five times the Tour de France (1957, 1961, 1962, 1963 and 1964), twice the Giro d'Italia (1960 and 1964), the Tour of Spain in 1936 and the Liège-Bastogne-Liège in 1966.
In addition, he was the first rider to win the Tour de France five times, the first to win all three big rounds and the first Frenchman to wear the yellow jersey in the Tour de France from day one to the last
3 Bernard Hinault (France)
He is the only cyclist to finish first or second in each Tour de France in which he participated, a race he won five times: 1978, 1979, 1981, 1982 and 1985.
Together, it won the Giro d'Italia in three editions (1980, 1982 and 1985); twice the Tour of Spain (1978 and 1983); and he became World Champion in 1980.
4 Fausto Coppi (Italy)
He was particularly noticeable in the Giro d'Italia, where he won five victories: 1940, 1947, 1949, 1952 and 1953. At his first victory, in 1940, at only 20 years, 8 months and 25 days, he became the youngest cyclist to win the Giro, a record that still stands.
He also won twice the Tour de France (1949 and 1952), was world champion cycling (1953) and set the world championship record in 1942.
5 Gino Bartali (Italy)
He won three times the Giro d'Italia (1936, 1937 and 1946), twice the Tour de France (1938 and 1948) and the Tour de Suisse in 1946 and 1947.
While one may not always be able to agree 100% with another person about some names, something that there is no doubt that at that time they were all great athletes, who repeatedly excited us
