... or how a simple Flemish song in Poland grew into a real Belgian dance.
This song is one from my early days of the group Lais. I always liked the song with a bit of a medieval melody that stuck. But as with a lot of beautiful songs, you end up forgetting them a bit.
Years later. and in the meantime I worked in the Netherlands. Suddenly, one of my colleagues of Polish origin came up with the story that she had danced the Belgian dance at the wedding of her niece in Poland and whether I could do it with the residents here, because it was fun.
“The Belgian dance” I wondered in despair. what dance may that be. My first idea was that it was about that dance that the whole country had learned to the song “Give Me a Kiss” on the occasion of our National Day when King Philip was crowned. But it wasn't.
I also thought about the well-known 'bird dance', but that seemed pretty unlikely to me. After a bit of reseach on youtube, because the song is really 'a big thing' in Poland, I found out that it was about this wonderful song.
The story says that years ago, a Flemish youth movement created this dance to the song at their camp in Poland and that the locals took over. Meanwhile, the song is sometimes set up and danced there at almost every wedding or party. So how a simple Flemish song had to travel more than 1000 km to be called our national dance. Personally, I think it's a nice song and a nice dance and so I taught him my son.
