On 15 November 1944, in the middle of World War II, the largest bank robbery in the Netherlands took place in Almelo.
A local resistance group led by Derk Smoes did this robbery, in order to provide financial support for railmen, who had to go into hiding because of the railway strike in 1944.
The truck with which the resistance fighters had arrived was too small to carry all the money. As a result, only 46 million guilders were taken out, that was about half the money that was present.
The Germans discovered the money later
