The bird of paradise flower, Madeira's national pride.
The Portuguese but autonomous island of Madeira is also sometimes called the flower island.
Since it's only the beginning of April, we didn't really expect this amount of floral beauty at all.
This bird of paradise flower (Latin name Strelitzia reginae) or birdhead flower (Latin name Strelitzia reginae) or birdhead flower provides a beautiful color spectacle.

One of my mom's favorite flowers, porridge had a plant for years and never a flower. eventually, the plant became too big for their house and the plant disappeared. Knowing Dad, he gave it away, but I'm not sure anymore.
@Bumblebea They are fairly large plants. Here in Madeira, right?. The flower stalks alone are over one meter. The flower is really special, isn't it? ?
I think this one is breathtakingly beautiful.
It is a beautiful flower with all those beautiful colors and its sturdy shape. In Belgium, they can only wear antlers in the living room, because the temperature is often too low here.
With global warming, it might be possible in the summer. Or have they bloomed then? It is often too dry here in the summer, now too. That wasn't 10 years ago.

@Toto Animo I suspect it's best to put them in a pot, which can probably be put outside in the summer. It is also only about 14 degrees here at the higher altitudes and they are also in the open ground there.
@Toto Animo From April - October, they can safely stand outside in a warm, sunny spot in the Benelux countries. Only you have to bring them in when there is a threat of frost. Because even a little frost affects the plant. Like Enigma, I think it's best... Do the leaves turn brown from.
If you've been to Madeira, you've probably noticed that they only grow and thrive on the southern part of the island.
@Leo 1 I have to contradict you here, though. The photos you see on this page were all taken in the northeast of the island, some even in mountain villages in the northeast. And I'm here at the moment. so it couldn't be more current.
@enigma Well, then we probably didn't pay close attention during our Madeira visits. We had a pretty good look at the island, I think, but maybe wine was on the island at the wrong time of year. We saw them growing in the wild (and therefore not in gardens) only in the south against mountain slopes.
She stays beautiful
I have a seed from Mallorca, which is now germinating.

@Frutselen in de Marge As a houseplant then ? I suspect they don't thrive outside in our climate.
@enigma yes, I suspect, but with rising temperatures, probably also partly outside
What lovely flowers.
@Anneke Visser Yes, they are beautiful !
Mooie plant!
