The birth of a flamenco pop star
With an exceptionally impressive album, Spanish singer Rosalía catapults herself towards pop stardom in an unlikely genre: flamenco. The 26-year-old Catalan gives the music style a pop treatment with autotune, deep beats, well-produced videos and an overall freshness that contrasts with tradition. At the same time, she retains elements such as the characteristic palmas (hand clap), and especially her melissa, the complainant Arabic tone variations in one syllable. The effect: a flamenco pop star.
