The story begins when Anja thinks of suicide. Anja is a 53-year-old literature professor whose husband suffers from Alzheimer's. She once promised to help him die if he doesn't recognize anyone. He is now in a nursing home because of his illness he quietly loses his memories. Anja is difficult to cope with this, struggling with the fact for the sake of the promised “help” and becomes depressed.
The second main character is Mari. Mari is Anja's niece.
