The Brides of Sallas
Chapter 14.
It could be because of the restless night, not one, but several snurkers and squeaks, everyone is out early. Backpacks are caught and one leaves. Also the silent man who came from another direction yesterday is already gone. Hugh and I will lock the place down and be the last ones on the road. It's a confusing beginning. A highway is being built here, and we have to go around a lot to get back on the right track. It is not pleasant to walk on the pebbles and stones that are intended as a substrate for the highway.
In the distance we see the first pilgrims walking again. Our pace is high and we're catching up with a few. This way we also pass the silent man who is puffing along the road. Can you do it? I ask, but I don't get an answer. He doesn't seem to understand me. He only points forward, so on. That's what we do.
After 18 km we arrive in Salas. It's Sunday and there's a procession. First Communion. In the RK church a festive event. Children aged 6-7 years are allowed for communion in mass for the first time, they also receive the hosti (always stuck to my palate) in the mouth. Prior to this ritual, the children will also confess for the first time. Here in Spain it's a really big party. You have special stores where you can buy the clothes they need to wear. The girls like a bride and the boys wear a mini military suit, complete with copper buttons. So this is where we end up in. Super busy. All the bars are almost reserved for the parties that the families give.
