The Catatumbo Lightning
The Catatumbo Lightning is a phenomenon known in the scientific community that is characterized by the continuous and 'silent' appearance of lightning that occurs in clouds that develop vertically and produce electric shocks up to 4 kilometers high.
According to researchers studying the phenomenon centuries ago, this phenomenon is produced by the orographic effect of the mountain ranges that enclose and curb the northeast winds, in the basin of Lake Maracaibo in Venezuela, but mainly in the southern zone of that lake and in the lower basin of the Catatumbo River.
Such is electrical activity, that this natural process can be seen from Cucuta or other long distances. Sometimes it can last up to 10 hours. and reach 60 downloads per minute, according to the Scientific Modeling Center.
Some of the most famous scientists and explorers in the region described it as “electric explosions that are like phosphorescent flashes...” said Alexander Von Humboldt; and by Augustine Codazzi as a “continuous lightning that appears to emerge from the Zulia River and its surroundings.”.
In Zulia, a Venezuelan state bordering Colombia, he actually incorporated the phenomenon into his anthem
“The light with which the lightning/tenacious of the Catatumbo/of the nauta sets the course/which limpid lantern”
