The city giant or horntover fly is larger (18-25mm) than all other hoverflies and can be seen from June to October.
The rear is yellow to rust red with black bands. In women, the breast piece is rust red, in men more black.
Especially among the women, the yellow head stands out. From the short antennae you can see that it is a fly and not a wasp. wasps always have long antennas.

He is a summer guest, he comes from southern Europe to the Netherlands and is most seen here in the west and south of our country. The name citygiant refers to the huge size (for a hoverfly) and that it is seen more in cities than outside. The name hornlood-fly refers to the resemblance to our biggest real wasp, the hornet.
