How the story of the son of freed slaves was still translated almost 50 years after his death. The color of cotton is the life story of Nate Shaw, a black tenant farmer from the Deep South of the United States. It was published in 1974 and immediately won a prestigious National Book Award. Historian Theodore Rosengarten had recorded Shaw's compelling stories exactly as he had heard Shaw, a born storyteller, speak. Fifty years later, Shaw's history continues to fascinate. The civil rights movement has changed a lot for the better in the US for the black population, but racism and social deprivation have largely remained. The color of cotton shows the harsh reality of life in the Deep South, and the resilience it takes to keep fighting. The color of cotton is the first Dutch translation of this important book.
