In 2012, a court found Samsung guilty of violating three design patents and sentenced Samsung to pay $1.05 billion in damages to Apple.
“It's a pity that patent law can be manipulated to give a company a monopoly on rectangles with rounded corners," said the creator of the Galaxy series at the time.
The South Korean company appealed against the amount of compensation it had to pay.
Samsung had argued that it would have to pay only $28 million in damages, that is, an amount limited to the profits of the company directly related to the components or functions covered by the patents.
Instead, Apple asked for $2.5 billion, calculated on the basis of profits made by the total price of an iPhone.
Due to the dispute over the amount that Samsung was supposed to deliver, the process was extended to this day.
This Thursday's court finds that 533.3 million dollars of the total fee Samsung has to pay corresponds to the infringement of three Apple design patents.
The rest of the $539 million was imposed for copying two own functions.
