I do miss who I was.
I spoke to an elderly lady about her life some time ago.
A lifetime of changes that had left deep marks.
Longing for the past: for youth and vitality, for health and independence, for relationships and social engagement, for meaningful moments and, above all, for the former simplicity.
Yes, and when I think about all that, I think: “I understand her”
I wrote a poem for her and I wish it to carry a message of hope and rediscovery.
It is my desire that this woman, but who knows, maybe you too, will find the opportunity to (re) discover the true identity in Christ in the midst of all kinds of struggles.
The poem is called:
I miss who I was.
Change and loss, self-discovery and acceptance, who doesn't know it.
Life is a personal journey for everyone, full of joy, but unfortunately also full of sadness.
Emotions and memories weave who we are little by little.
Sometimes longing for the past, but always with the need to move forward, despite pain.
Circumstances can create changes and even influence our identity.
Sometimes you can think: “Who am I really anymore” and you lose everything a little bit for a moment.
“I often miss who I was, but it's not who I am anymore”
Your words are more than familiar to me and they touch my heart.
Your words show anxiety, impotence, uncertainty, it has all confused you a little.
And that's why.
Embrace the person you are now and try to accept the present.
No matter your old age, we really can still learn until our last breath.
Go in complete confidence and always strive for this.
Because I am sure that God will also give you answers.
Your true identity is in Christ and it is unchangeable, so fight today by holding on to who He believes you are.
He who created you, He who knew you long before you were born.
We can experience the time that remains for us with Him through and above all.
How beautiful and how valuable it is to be able to pass on a little bit of His love.
Dear, older lady, your lifetime won't take years. It is therefore high time for you to re-enter your own identity.
I wish you lots of blessings on the road you still have to go and my message is: “Stay as close as possible, yes, as close as you can, and even until your very last breath of life, be very close to Jesus”
