During a Russian expedition in Antarctica in April 1961, he began to feel severe pains in his abdomen, thus self-diagnosing that he had peritonitis caused by acute appendicitis.
Faced with the impossibility of returning by plane and being the only doctor on the expedition, he had no choice but to operate himself with the sole help of an engineer and a meteorologist who were passing him the surgical instruments and holding a mirror so that he could see his abdomen.
With a solution of Novocain as anesthesia, a 12 cm incision was made. and the appendix was removed. The intervention lasted 1 hour and 45 minutes, which was a success.
