The drug war in Antwerp
I've lived in 2060 Antwerp all my life. In recent years, my neighborhood has become grimmer. Every night, men are openly dealing in my street.
Drugs are certainly not ruled out in a big city like Antwerp, but if it used to happen in a confined environment, the nuisance is now increasingly public.
The night of Saturday, April 1 to Sunday, April 2, I was startled by a loud bang shortly after 3 am. The dull blow made the whole house shake. Right away, I knew something was profoundly wrong.
When I went outside to look, the neighborhood was covered in a smokescreen. My gut feeling was right: this was a bombing in the drug environment. Miraculously, only one person was injured by flying glass. Twenty houses were damaged and eight cars. Fortunately, I have no damage, but I'm still trembling on my legs somewhere.
The De Conink Square around my corner is notorious and coming after a certain hour is asking to be raided. At the end of September, my friend was the victim of an armed robbery.
The drugs bring crime. An 11-year-old girl was shot dead in Merksem. In Borgerhout, someone was seriously injured during a bombing at the end of March.
In my neighborhood, we hold our hearts. We are gradually getting used to getting used to bombs and grenades, to the extent that we ever get used to it.
I have the feeling that the government has also simply lost touch with the people. More and more people are falling by the wayside and falling into marginality. The result is that there are more and more dealers and more addicts, but also more competition.
More and more people are moving in my neighborhood. Beautiful houses are turned into drug houses. The neighborhood gets such a bad name that you can barely find a professional who wants to come and work there.
I've been living in Antwerp North for 45 years. I've never seen it so bad as it is now. Where it's going, I don't know either.
Are our politicians making efforts to solve the problem? My feeling is that they have lost so much contact with people lately that they are only fueling the problem.
I hate that I want to leave my house gradually because the situation is becoming hopeless.
