The Earth Bumblebee (Bombus Terrestris)
One of the most common species of bumblebees is the earth bumblebee ( Bombus terrestris ). You can recognize earth bumblebees by their distinctive appearance: a breastpiece with a yellow collar that is otherwise completely black. The abdomen of earth bumblebees has a distinctive color pattern of black, yellow and black and white.
Habitat
The earth bumblebee is naturally widespread and has a diverse habitat.Since Earth bumblebees are generalist pollinators, they adapt well to different environments and can thrive in a wide range of habitats, as long as sufficient food sources are available throughout the growing season.
- This bumblebee species is found in Europe, parts of Asia and North Africa. Within these regions, they inhabit a variety of habitats, ranging from gardens and meadows to forests and heathlands.
- In gardens, they thrive in flowery areas, where they have access to a wide range of flowering plants for nectar and pollen.
- Pastures and grasslands also provide excellent habitats for earth bumblebees, especially when there are plenty of flowering plants present.
- Within forest areas, earth bumblebees can build nests near clearings where flowers grow, along forest edges, or in forest edge habitats where they have easy access to food sources.
