Did you know that eels are a critically endangered species? In fact, eels are doing so badly that there are only 3% left of the animals that swam there in the 1970s. International scientists are sounding the alarm and asking for a stop on eel fishing. But the Netherlands, as the largest eel fisherman in the world, has only caught more eels in recent years.

Millions of young eels are disappearing in nurseries The Netherlands is the largest eel fisherman and “eel grower” in the world. Because eels do not reproduce in captivity, millions of very young eels (glass eels) are caught at sea every year, after which they are fattened and killed in nurseries. This is in addition to the hundreds of thousands of adult animals caught from, among others, the IJsselmeer.

It is absurd that there is massive hunting for a seriously endangered species in the Netherlands. In addition, there is serious animal suffering in the eel farms. The eels naturally travel thousands of miles on its own, but in a nursery, the animal is crammed by thousands in a bare container. There is virtually no room for natural behavior, which leads to stress and the risk of illness and mortality is high.
