First, we need to understand what the concept of racial discrimination means. Racial discrimination is the prejudicial treatment of people or groups based on race, that is, skin color. The human brain is usually conditioned so that from birth, we learn things naturally. However, values are taught and learned from society, peers, or parents. It is true that when a child is born, they do not know how to judge people based on their skin pigmentation.
Faulty logic refers to flawed reasoning. We have often seen states with a broken social system that gives privileges to some while oppressing others. We also have often watched ourselves prejudice others based on non-intellectual or clear logic as to why we do so.
There are five important points of discussion that we need to note as we dive deep into the topic of faulty logic in racial discrimination.
Do we have certain characteristics or behavior attributes to a certain race?
We often prey to a deceptive scheme based on a person's prevailing circumstances, which we call this faulty logic. We, at some point, tend to attribute characteristics and behaviors to a certain race even when we have no rational correlation. For example, we believe that all Chinese products are fake from the stereotype that Chinese products are fake. Hence, we do not trust their products. Then the question of race arises. Who has the problem? We logically know that the skin tone, eyes, and origin cannot be attributed to a certain behavior, yet we have socially been enslaved to believe that as true. We now have to unlearn what we know because it is faulty logic.
Why do we desire the people of color to change their behavior and 'act white.' We see that white people live in the fullness of their culture in the world today. However, we always expect the people of color to disentangle themselves from their culture to fit in. why should melanin people spend so much time shaping themselves into attributes that fit the white people? It is time we also appreciate the diversity of our cultures and let it reflect.
We have to learn that multiple interpretations exist based on different aspects, ideas, and ideologies; hence, we should not be defensive of our thoughts. We should never take learning for granted because education is an amazing thing. What we learn in schools or outside schools is based on our story. Hence, we must learn to appreciate other people's sides of the story without prejudgments. We have multiple interpretations for different ideas, both from the past and current situations.
Are we genuine when listening to people of color? When people of color give their views, do we judge them because of their color or criticize their capacity. We have to focus on the sensitivity of the information rather than the person giving the information.
Do we accept that something is wrong with our social system? We must accept that we have grown up in a biased environment full of faulty comfort that thongs are always right. It is a hard fallacy that we must learn to unlearn. However, most of it has existed through the entire period of historical injustice. We cannot run away from the fact that people are treated differently based on their race. Looking at the world around us, we know that injustice and inequality do exist so much in our world today. If we allow the faulty culture system to continue, we can never enjoy life to the fullest. To enjoy the world to the fullest, we must primarily accept and appreciate the world in its diverse cultural aspects. Having a multicultural world helps us appreciate the gifts of diverse friendships.
Perhaps we also ask ourselves, for instance, in America, racial injustice has existed for over four hundred years right now, there have been chains and chains of movement since of late Dr. Martin Luther King Junior. However, nothing has changed the systems despite revolutions, rallies, and campaigns championing racial equity and equality. We have also had the Black Lives Matter and The Anti-racist movements. However, so far, nothing seems to be changing.
It now simply means we have first to change our ways. Get to unlearn our ways first. We have known how to become racist. Now we must learn how to become anti-racist. The first win to this war is to beat bias so badly. Bias can be both conscious and unconscious. For instance, if we favor people just because they look like us, we may not consciously know that we are becoming biased. However, it deeply impacts how we tranced those values to our children. Also, we may have been brought up in societies where we were taught that we have a war against a certain community. Hence, we should avoid them and not get married to them. It is a misleading perception of things, and we need to change our ways of thinking and be careful about what information we pass to the next generations.
It is wrong to transition our faulty historical injustices to our sons and daughters. If we opt for intervention but still go back to the same societies with biases, we will fall multiple times.
We can easily start the change with our kids. Kids learn very easily. Hence, we can teach them how to be anti-racist. It can go a long way in reforming the broken systems and having a better generation. So, still, hope is not lost. We can teach our kids not to see race and color.
Just as the late Dr. Martin Luther King said,' I have a dream that one day my children will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.' Similarly, we must learn to translate the content of character rather than the content of skin to our kids.
In conclusion, we all have different skills, capacitating differently. Hence, if we can commit ourselves to facilitate a resourceful dialogue that can champion a radical change, we can finally acquire a lasting systematic change and win the race against race.
