The first court hearing (48)
... she was a fugitive for several years...
Pietje is arraigned
Follow-up story Kalle and Pietje, part 48
The tension increases during the night. The next day Pietje is brought before the judge. It's her first trial, and she doesn't know what to expect.
The District Attorney puts the charges first. He emphasizes that Pietje confessed to the chatter tricks. He also strongly notes that she was a fugitive for several years and now, thanks to Investigation requested, is finally brought arraigned. She's not a poor bastard.
Pietje's lawyer argues in his defence for a limited penalty because of her poor childhood. He pleads to suspend her imprisonment for the rest of this trial.
