The future of film and cinema

Have you heard someone saying „You talkin‘ to me?“, without another person instantly mentioning Robert de Niro in Martin Scorseses’s Taxi Driver?

Films are everywhere. They are watched, talked about and if they are really good they‘ll stay in our mind forever. It‘s easy to admit that Films were the dominating medium in the 20th century. During that time, watching films meant going to the movies. Buying a cup of popcorn, sitting back and enjoying films that revolutionized the world of film. Box Office results were flourishing and Hollywood delivered one masterpiece after another.


But the last decade, and especially the last few years have changed the entertainment landscape dramatically.

At the beginning of the 21st Century, the so-called „golden age“ of TV began. Shows like Game of thrones were launched and Sitcoms like How I met your Mother or The Big Bang Theory became immensely popular. With their rise, movies became less influential, but people were still willing to spend some good money to see a movie on the big screen. Then, during the 2010s, an online streaming platform called „Netflix“ became more and more popular. Now in 2021, it‘s hard to imagine anyone not knowing Netflix. In fact, in the United States of America, there are over 340 million active streaming subscriptions. Since the population of the United States only reaches up to 330 million, this number tells us that some households are using more than one streaming platform.
