The garbage collectors of the City of Antwerp
“Even before the start, the collectors said: 'Sincerely sympathy'” Everyone is chugging at these temperatures, but what about our garbage collectors? The round with residual waste consists of smelly bags. The waste has often been smelling in the sun on a city course for days.
Sanitary napkins
Flat oranges, spaghetti sauce, and sawflour: spread in a heap on Antwerp's vowels. The bag was too heavy and tore. Nash rushes to my aid with a cardboard box that should serve as a dirt can and a broom. It won't get us to get the sidewalk completely clean. “The colleagues in the sweeper team are coming by after us,” says Nash, “don't worry.” It won't be the last bag to tear on the round. Normally, the “leftover bag” should weigh only 75 kilos, but apparently few Antwerpeners put their garbage bag on the scale before taking it out. 20 kg bags appear to be no exception.
Their job gets even harder in this heat, and stinks even more.
