Rice is food for more than half of the world's population — but it also promotes diabetes and climate change. According to an Indonesian legend, the goddess Dewi Sri donated rice to the island of Java. Cassava was the main food until then, but because she felt sorry for the Javanese because of that boring cassava, she taught them how to grow rice seedlings in lush, green rice fields. In India, the Hindu goddess Annapurna is said to have played a similar role, and in Japan, it was reserved for Inari. Throughout Asia, rice is attributed a divine — and mostly feminine — origin.
