“The Great War” in my small village.
1918 - 2018: It's been exactly 100 years since my little village formed the backdrop of bloody scenes. If you know the tranquility of the Flemish fields, you can hardly imagine what it must have been like.
My village was already at the beginning of the war behind the front line in the German occupied territory.
It was used as a storage facility, training ground, airfield,... for the German army. As the last base for the front.
From 1916 it was regularly attacked by the Allies.
When the final offensive began in 1918, Kortemark was largely destroyed by bombing and residents were attacked or killed by air strikes.
