The koala is one of Australia's most recognisable animals and is known for its cute appearance and relaxed lifestyle. Despite their popularity, koalas face a number of threats that endanger their survival. In this blog post, I dive deeper into the world of the koala and discuss their physical characteristics, behavior, habitat, life expectancy, reproduction, food, their endangered status and what we can do to help them.

Habitat

Koalas are found in the forests of eastern and southeastern Australia, primarily in the states of Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia. They live in eucalyptus forests because the leaves of these trees are their main source of food. Koalas have a territory that consists of a group of trees that they visit regularly to eat and rest.

Life expectancy

In the wild, koalas have an average life expectancy of 10 to 12 years, although some can live up to 15 years. Their lifespan is influenced by factors such as food availability, diseases, and predation. Young koalas have higher mortality due to predators such as dogs and eagles, as well as from traffic accidents when they try to cross roads.
