Carved pumpkins with lights inside is something typical of Halloween, but how did this custom come about.
Well, this custom stems from the legend about an Irish smith named Stingy Jack, who lived in the 17th century. This man was cunning, greedy and evil. On Halloween night, the devil came to get Jack out of the pub in person. Jack, however, did not like it that way and begged the Devil for one last beer. But since Jack was also greedy, he asked the devil for money. The Devil, who was very proud of his ability to take on other forms, promptly turned into a coin so that Jack could buy his beer.
However, Jack did not buy a beer but put the money in his pocket, which also had a silver coin with a cross on it. Since the Devil has no power over the cross, it was therefore trapped in Jack's pocket. Eventually, they came to a deal and released Jack the Devil, provided he left him alone for 10 years.
Ten years passed and then the Devil came back for Jack's soul. This time, the smith did not resist, but he wanted to taste an apple one more time and asked the devil to pick it. So, the Devil, who just wanted to get rid of the whole thing, climbed up the tree to pick the apple. This time, Jack carved a cross into the tree so that the Devil was imprisoned again. After some negotiation again, Jack released the Devil on condition that he would never ask for his soul again. not alive and not dead.
However, Jack's happiness only lasted 365 days, because exactly 1 year later, on October 31, Jack died of natural causes. Arriving at the gate of heaven, however, Saint Peter refused him entry, because during his lifetime he had not really been a textbook example of virtue.
Then to hell, Jack thought. But that's what the Devil was already waiting for him. He reiterated the promise he had to make to Jack barely a year ago and he didn't get there either. So he just had to go wandering across the Earth. To get some light, the Devil gave him some hot coals. Once back on Earth, Jack put it in a hollowed out pumpkin.
That's how he's been wandering around the Earth for centuries now. and is he especially visible around this time (his death day). Irish migrants brought this legend to the USA and that's how this custom spread a bit around the world.
