The Manchester Thief

#shortstory In 1818, there was a fearless thief in the city of Manchester, England. He was nicknamed 'Captain Lightning' escaped English justice and ended up fleeing to the United States. There he began a covert life practicing medicine, taking the name of Doctor Harry Crawford, so that he was not recognized by the American authorities, he was wearing three suits on him, which allowed him to cover a deformed leg he had and made him look bigger.

Time passed and was not discovered by the authorities, but being in his final days, the man asked his friends to bury him without removing his clothes, that is, they will bury him with the clothes he was wearing, but unfortunately this request could not be fulfilled because the body had to be prepared to be properly buried. When he died and his body was taken to be prepared, the employee of the funeral home was surprised to find, in the lifeless body of the so-called Dr. Harry Crawford, wound scars and an atrophied leg, which matched the description of the famous English thief. A review at the house of the late Dr. Harry finished dispelling doubts by finding watches, jewelry and diamonds in a hiding place. The commissioner knew that the doctor was, in fact, 'Captain lightning', a thief in disguise. They had been deceived!

There are lies that can last hidden for a long period of time and as time goes by one comes to believe that it is true. But even if we hide it sooner or later the truth will always come to light.

Lying the human mind creates a remorse. That remorse can trigger sudden emotional changes or depression. It is very likely that we have hidden or are hiding truths for years. Perhaps we have done so as not to harm a loved one or because we know that the truth will destroy our home or those people we love so much. But the longer the lie is held, the harder the consequences will be when the truth is discovered.

God's purpose is not to accuse anyone, because we've all lied at some point, but if he wants us to be honest people. We can reconstruct what was destroyed with lies, by telling the truth and seeking forgiveness. That will help us live with a clear conscience and have an emotionally healthy life.
