The Máxima Canal
To know what and where the Máxima Canal is, we first have to look at another channel: the Zuid-Willemsvaart. This canal owes its existence to King William I, who, with this channel, intended an alternative to the waterway over the Meuse, which was not equally navigable for the ships everywhere.
The Zuid-Willemsvaart started at the Maas near Maastricht, and then eventually went to 's-Hertogenbosch and then via the canal Dieze again into the Maas. Today, part of this canal is located on Belgian territory.
