On Wednesday 26 May, the first total lunar eclipse of the year will occur, dubbed as 'blood moon' due to its reddish colour, although it can only be observed in East Asia, Australia, Pacific Ocean and America.
This phenomenon occurs when the Earth passes between the Moon and the Sun generating a shadow on the Moon. For this to happen, the three celestial bodies must be perfectly aligned.. During the event, our satellite turns reddish because sunlight will not come directly to it, but part of that light will be filtered through the Earth's atmosphere and the satellite will be projected on it the reddish and orange colors.
On the same day, we will also be able to observe the biggest and brightest full moon of 2021, called 'supermoon of flowers' for occurring in the middle of spring. A 'supermoon' occurs when the moon looks much larger than normal because it is when it is closest to Earth in its monthly orbit.
Other eclipses
This will follow three other solar and lunar eclipses, although none can be observed from Spain. The first will be on Thursday, June 10, when there will be an annular solar eclipse, called 'fire ring'. This happens when the Moon is near the heyday and its angular diameter is less than that of the Sun, so that at the maximum phase a ring of the Sun's disk remains visible. The phenomenon can be seen from Canada, Greenland and eastern Russia. In the east of the United States it will have the form of a partial solar eclipse.
Already in November, Thursday 18, a partial lunar eclipse will take place, visible in America, Australia and some parts of Asia and Europe, although not in our country. This event, known as the 'beaver's moon', will involve a particularly deep partial lunar eclipse, when 97% of the Moon enters the Earth's shadow. The phenomenon will last 3 hours and 30 minutes. It is so called because this animal spice, beavers, at the end of November have already stored all the food in their burrows, so they are already prepared to survive the winter inside their homes. It was so baptized by the Native Americans, who used this moon to capture them.
Finally, on Saturday, December 4, the alignment of the Sun, Moon and Earth will be even more accurate, and a total solar eclipse will occur. However, it will only be visible from Antarctica.
