The first Olympics were held in 776 BC. We know this because it is the first time the names of the winners of a race were written but maybe others were held before and they didn't notice them who knows?
The Olympic Games, or Olympics, are so called because, originally, they were held in the city of Olympia, Greece. Every four years, the best athletes from every city-state and kingdom of ancient Greece met in this city, and competed in honor of Zeus, one of the Greek gods. The Olympic Games were such an important event that wars and conflicts between city-states and kingdoms stopped during those days, and were reflected in various works of art, such as Mirón's Discobolo.
The first Olympic champion was Corebo, a baker from the city of Elis, and he was not awarded a medal, but an olive wreath.
Greek historian Pausanias told that Heracles Ideo and his four brothers ran to Olympia to entertain Zeus when he was just born. As Heracles was the first to arrive he won, and they placed an olive crown on his head. This is how the celebration of the Olympics in honor of Zeus began, according to legend.
Another theory, that of Greek writer Pindaro, says he was one of the sons of Zeus, who built the first Olympic stadium in honor of his father.

Ancient Greeks celebrated their Olympics for more than a thousand years before they were banned.
Many years later, in 1859, a wealthy Greek businessman decided to resume the Olympic Games and they were held again. This time the competitions were held in a square in Athens and only local athletes competed. This man also began to rebuild the Panathianaiko stadium, so that they could hold the Olympic Games there in the future.
In 1896, in Athens, the first Olympic Games were held with athletes from 14 different countries. At that time there were only 9 olympic sports.
The next edition of the Olympic Games was held 4 years later, in 1900 in Paris and, for the first time, women were able to participate.
