The man behind the awards: Alfred Nobel
The origins of the Nobel Prizes go back to one man: Alfred Nobel (1833–1896). This Swedish inventor, chemist and industrialist was extremely successful. He owned more than 350 patents , but was best known as the inventor of dynamite . That brought him a fortune, but also a bad image.
In 1888, when his brother Ludvig died, a French newspaper mistakenly published Alfred's obituary entitled:
“ The merchant of death is dead. ”
