These pretty blossoms grow into heart-shaped, prickly, reddish brown tubes that contain a red, waxy substance around the seeds.It contains a natural dye called annatto (E160b).The natives use it to color their faces and possibly arms or legs.

The fruit is used in Latin America, the Caribbean Islands and the Philippines as a coloring and flavoring agent in their preparations.

It colors their dishes yellow to orange.

The taste of the fruit is slightly sweet and peppery.
