Cartagena's palenqueras

They are those beautiful brunette women who roam the streets of the historic city of Cartagena Colombia, with huge smiles, dressed in rainbows and craving all tourists with a menu of the most exotic fruits characteristic of our land, an exquisite mix of flavors, tastes and colors, represented in fruits such as mangoes, bananas, watermelons, pineapples and papayas on their heads.

They are descendants of slaves. Like all the black population of America, they are heirs to slavery, heirs of maroon slaves, that is, captives who, by force of struggle and tenacity, won their freedom by escaping to remote places.

San Basilio de Palenque”, which is located near Cartagena, just 50 km away in the municipality of Mahates, in the department of Bolivar. Some of these women travel daily to offer their products, during the day they sell various fruit dishes and take pictures with hundreds of tourists.
