Los abismos, Pilar Quintana's latest novel that earned her the Alfaguara award for novel 2021, catches by her surround rhythm and narrative that make one as a reader not want to release the book until she finished it. 2428 manuscripts from all corners of Latin America and Spain were presented at the call for the prize.

Her female characters are strong and full of edges. They escape the conventional, explore the thresholds and boundaries of psychology and life situations. There are Amelia and Gloria Inés, sister-in-law and cousin of Claudia Mama. Amelia, that aunt close and present for the girl who then also fades away. Amelia is the adult with whom the girl Claudia connects, talks and feels recognized. Gloria exacerbates the fears of our protagonist because through her she looks at the presence of death.

“Fear of orphanhood, heights, fog and darkness itself”. The psychological abyss overlapped with those of the surrounding territory to Cali. Those precipices of the soul that give a universal character to the characters of Quintana by reflecting on crucial issues of existence such as death, suicide, abandonment, desire, social prisons and children exposed to all this.
