The Sustainable 100 jury awards The sustainable farmers of Caring Farmers and Frisse Wind, a citizens' initiative that strives for a clean environment around Tata Steel, are, according to the jury, the most sustainable citizens' initiatives of 2022.

“It's a positive sound in an angry world,” the jury judges on farmers who show how they work without harming nature. This year, the Caring Farmers citizens' initiative is the winner of Trouw's Sustainable 100

Don't wait for the government to take action “There is a lot of perspective for environmentally friendly agriculture,” says Klaske Kruk, chairman of the jury, about Caring Farmers. “The farmers who are members of Caring Farmers show that. They have guts and perseverance. They do not wait for the government to take measures to protect the environment, but start themselves. While there are tensions and unrest among many farmers about the future of agriculture, this group shows that there are solutions”,.

In number two in the ranking of citizens' initiatives, the jury also opts for a current theme: the residents' organization Frisse Wind, which fights against air pollution by Tata steel plant in IJmuiden.

At number 16 is the Village Council Wijk aan Zee. Both organizations insist on the need for a healthy living environment. Partly under pressure from these citizens, the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) conducted research last year. This confirmed their concerns and showed that the air in the IJmond area is seriously polluted. In January, Frisse Wind filed a report against the factory on behalf of 1100 local residents.
