From poor to rich soil, that is the story that the documentary Onder het Maaiveld tells. Director Mark Verkerk, who previously The New Wilderness and The Wild City created, now focuses on the underground, unseen wilderness. Only recently have scientists paid attention to the dazzling network of fine fungi, microscopic animals and bacteria that are necessary for all life on Earth.
Everything moves, crawls, wriggles, teems. Barely a fraction of it can be seen with the naked eye, so microscopic. Earthworms in particular stand out, shiny, graceful creatures that dig ingenious tunnels. The interaction between all the animals and plants is also a fascinating spectacle in itself. The luminous fungi (scientifically: the mycelium) look like a galaxy.
The underground realm, we still know too little about that.
