One in 10 university students drop out. This is one of the main conclusions of the study on dropout of undergraduate studies in the Spanish university system, recently presented by the Ministry of Universities.
Why do they quit? A factor linked to academic performance
Although there are many variables that affect a student deciding not to continue their undergraduate studies, of all of them, academic performance has the most weight, according to the report data.
The lower the performance, that is, the fewer credits you approve of the total number of enrolled credits, the greater the likelihood of dropping out: “The fight against college dropout should not be detached from the fight against poor educational achievement. A student who doesn't take exams, who doesn't go to class, etc, could alert us to a possible abandonment,” explains MarĂa Fernández.
Parents' tuition fees, age, admission grade or academic level also influence the chances of dropping out. “We have observed that students whose parents are not university educated are more likely to drop out,” says the author. In this sense, it proposes “not to increase the economic costs resulting from poor academic performance for those students who prove economic vulnerability”.
In general, the variables that most influence abandonment are of an individual nature (in relation to the characteristics of the student or their family environment) followed by variables related to the degree they are taking. In this sense, those degrees linked to the branches of Arts and Humanities and that require a lower admission mark have higher drop-out rates, compared to degrees in Health Sciences, where most enrollees complete their studies.
Preventing dropout in undergraduate studies: what measures are there?
The Ministry of Universities has implemented a series of measures aimed at promoting equal opportunities, improving access to the university system and preventing dropout.
These include “the reduction of public prices in the undergraduate and master's degrees and the boost in scholarship policy”, as emphasized by the Ministry in a press release. Likewise, “the call for scholarships has been advanced by 4 months, while the Preliminary Draft of the Organic Law of the University System (LOSU) also includes significant advances regarding scholarships, students' rights, the development of university extension activities and their participation within the university”.
