The emotional intensity and overwhelming energy of gifted children is great. They have a special way of seeing the world, qualitatively, quantitatively, or both at the same time. They also process experiences differently. This often makes gifted children more intense, more sensitive. They shoot easily in extreme states of mind, from very happy to desperate. These characteristics of giftedness are often less familiar to people.
Characteristics of giftedness
The behavior of gifted children often deviates from “the norm”, which can also result in a lot of misunderstanding. Their excitement is seen as excessive; their inability to sit still with excitement is seen as ADHD behavior. Perpetual questioning is seen as whining or undermining authority. Their imagination is seen as a lack of sense of reality. Passion is seen as obsessive behavior or Asperger syndrome. The strong emotions are seen as childish. And their creative whimsy is seen as a contrarian. Gifted people often go through a development that is very different from the 'normal' development of children.
Almost every gifted child is highly sensitive to stimuli in one or more areas. This sensitivity is one of the characteristics of giftedness that are not always well known. The more sensitive a child is, the more problems arise in the environment. They avoid misunderstanding and find it difficult to connect.
Physically
Gifted children often have a high energy level, which is reflected in great agility, excitement and quick talk. But also physical unrest, desire to be busy, drive and competitiveness. This involves the capacity to be active and energetic. In case of emotional tension, this irritability can be expressed by talking excessively, impulsive actions, nervous behavior (biting your nails or playing the drums) or “playing the clown”.
Sensory sensitive ability
Children enjoy sensory perceptions intensely, such as beauty, visual arts, literature and music. It can also be expressed by an urge for comfort, luxury and a need for admiration and attention. But the sensitivity to labels on clothes or the seams of socks is also difficult to endure. Children with this sensitivity to stimuli generally enjoy seeing, smelling, tasting, touching and hearing. Beautiful words, music, shapes, colors, harmony and balance make them happy. In case of emotional tension, this high sensitivity to stimuli can lead to lots of delicious food, be sexually eager at a young age and have a great need for attention.
Intellectual, intense activity of the mind
Gifted children often have a tendency to ask profound questions, solve problems, and search for the truth. This can be expressed by wanting to analyze everything, through logic and theoretical problems, keen sense of observation. Being critical, thinking symbolically, developing new ideas and concepts, and thinking about one's own thinking. This creates, as it were, an intellectual hunger. They are insatiably curious, focused, often eager readers. They can observe closely, remember things in detail, make detailed plans, and have the capacity for sustained intellectual effort. In case of emotional tension, this sensitivity to stimuli can be expressed by being too critical of oneself and others, perfectionism and knowingness. The focus on moral issues can also drive a child to despair because of his helplessness.
Imagination
This can be expressed through the frequent use of images and metaphors in the language, poetic use of words, a strong ability to visualize detailed and vivid visualizations, inventiveness, quick dreaming of boredom, having imaginary friends, dramatizing life. Imagination can bring joy and creativity to everyday life and helps develop intellectual gifts. As Einstein said, “Imagination is more important than knowledge”. In case of emotional tension, this irritability can no longer be expressed by fantasy and reality, living in a false world, dreaming violently and imagining things.
Emotionally
The high sensitivity to emotions is often the first of the irritable sensitivities that parents notice. Children have a strong sense of other people's emotions and can relate to them. These children can be very shy and are very aware of their own feelings and how they change. In case of emotional tension, this irritability can be manifested by complaints such as abdominal pain, headache, poor sleep or flushing. Children are sometimes very concerned with death. They are anxious or have depression. Their compassion and concern for others, their focus, their connection with others, and the intensity of their feelings will be difficult on a regular basis. It can irritate people who do not understand this sensitivity to stimuli.
