#history Observing the disadvantages of the pedal velocipede, now called a “bicycle”, Charles Desnos, a graduate of the École Centrale in Paris, filed a patent for “improvements in locomotion devices known as velocipeds”.
It gave each wheel an exclusive function, as Alexandre Mercier had done. In addition, it added 2 gears to the drive wheel (one for starting and climbing hills and one for riding at a higher speed) and integrated the pedal-driven crankshaft.
This design set the precedent for the modern bicycle with a front steering wheel, a rear wheel drive, an upward drive with a belt or chain, and a change of speed in the transmission.
