The Venezuelan Turpial

On May 23, 1958, the Venezuelan Society of Sciences, made up of scientists and naturalists, declared the Turpial, Ave Nacional de Venezuela, In Venezuela there is the water turpial, the orchards turpial, very abundant in the region of Lake Maracaibo; the yellow-tailed turpial, the Baltimore turpial, which visits the Zulia in the arid zone of Maracaibo. La Guajira in winter time boreal, and the common turpial, which is the National Bird.

The Turpial is present in almost all of the national territory and feeds on insects, fruits, eggs and even smaller birds. It is a territorial bird whose scientific name is Icterus Icterus, which usually occupies abandoned nests and its breeding season is between March and September. This songbird is distinguished by having black plumage on its head, chest and wings, the rest of the body is an earthy yellow, almost orange, adorned with a thin line white on its wings. Its beak is coniform, and the species is between 15 and 22 centimeters tall.
