The meaning of Western Wall refers to the Jewish people's habit of mourning the destruction of their sacred space, the Temple. It is also known by its Hebrew name Kotel, which means Wall. By the latter name and in English, there are signs in Jerusalem with the name Western Wall to indicate the way to one of the most important places in the Holy Land.
Another of the most significant denominations it receives is that of Wall of the Poor, as popular belief says it was built by the most homeless with great effort. This same conviction also explains that when the Romans destroyed the Temple, this part was maintained thanks to the divine intervention of the angels, who prevented a raised construction with so much sacrifice from being devastated.
What is done with the papers of the Wall
On a visit to the Western Wall, it is tradition to introduce a small paper among its stones with a prayer, prayer or wish. Once there, they are considered sacred objects and according to religious regulations, they cannot be destroyed.
That is why twice a year an official cleaning of papers is carried out, which are subsequently buried on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem. The wall is always cleaned before Rosh Hashanah (Jewish New Year) and Pesach, a day commemorating the liberation of the Hebrew people as slaves of Egypt; two important festivities in Judaism.

Currently, the Western Wall is known to extend up to 488 meters long. Of these, only 12% (60 meters) are visible, since much of its extension is buried under the muslim quarter of the city. This sacred wall brings together several interesting architectural points, such as the Arch of Wilson. It used to be part of a large bridge connecting both slopes of the esplanade where the Temple was located; today, it is the only visible and well-preserved construction of what was the most sacred building of the Jews. In the tunnels of the Western Wall it is believed that there is one of the largest stones that have been used to date in the construction sector. It is practically a piece weighing 500 tons and is more than 12 meters long and 3.4 meters high.
