To allow migratory fish to swim back and forth between the Wadden Sea and the IJsselmeer, just a gap in the Afsluitdijk is not enough. Years of thought preceded it to determine what is the best design for all types of migratory fish. It is the first time in the world that an artificial tidal river is built on the border of fresh and saltwater. Special is that no drop of salt water gets into the IJsselmeer, so that it is preserved more as a drinking water source. The Fish Migration River therefore offers a safe solution in which nature gains and conservation of fresh water go hand in hand.

Under the A7 on the Afsluitdijk, near Kornwerderzand, two construction tubs are connected to each other. One hole has now been made that will soon become the passage for migratory fish between the IJsselmeer and the Wadden Sea. There is still a lot of work to be done before the Fish Migration River is ready and fish can swim back and forth freely again.
