Many years ago, observing the rampant phenomenon of hyper-spoiled and omnipotent only children, used to not bearing the slightest frustration, and for whom duty and sacrifice were unknown concepts, I wondered what would happen to our society. Today I witness: husband who kills his wife and offspring because he fell in love with his colleague, mother who strangles the firstborn because he makes her life difficult, jealous man who sets fire to his pregnant partner, mother who drowns the baby in the tub to become a show girl, children who kill their parents.
We have gone beyond my worst predictions.
I think there is a real overturning of the concept of ethics. Form now prevails over substance, in a flattening that erases the true values, which would be existence in life, physical integrity, freedom, health.
The bar offense, the slap on the butt, the mockery, are scandal, homophobia, racism, machismo and drag people to court. Terrorism, on the other hand, finds ideological justifications, murder always obtains mitigating circumstances, penalty discounts, abbreviated rites, so as to be punished as a minor offense: see the thirteen years to Corona compared with the sixteen to Franzoni, see these uncertain, doubtful, exorbitant penalties if one is innocent and laughable if one is guilty, these penalties served up because one cannot decide whether the accused has committed the crime or not, because no one confesses anymore, because there is no conscience that can sting, because the investigation methods are not what they used to be and are based on infinitesimal evidence that a good lawyer is able to question. In the end, the dead killed themselves and the killers write books. Those in prison think only of going out and rebuilding a life, not of atoning and, if they speak of a "deep inner journey", They do so from a tabloid.
I am convinced that those who have made a mistake can change - the great saints have often been great sinners - but they must understand the evil done, feel excruciating remorse, have a tortured conscience that screams, expiate by dedicating themselves to others, seeking redemption perhaps with faith, with total self-denial, by any means, in short, but by not participating in a TV show as fancy guest.

A Thought about Society and Crime
