You may think that dumping a goldfish in a river is an innocent act, but in reality the fish can become devastating large.

Researchers at Murdoch University's Centre for Fish and Fishery Products have attempted to control goldfish in the Vasse River for 12 years, located in southwest Western Australia.

The goldfish is an invasive species that causes a havoc for indigenous fish and the surrounding ecosystem.

Stephen Beatty and his fellow researchers spent a year studying the little-known movement pattern of the wild goldfish.

The results of the study were published in an article in the journal. Ecology of Freshwater Fish.

Beatty explains that the study was conducted as a result of a surge in aquarium species, such as the goldfish, which was identified in the last 15 years in the Vasse River.
