This opera is a love letter to my culture.


In September 2021, the audio of Papiament opera Katibu di Shon will be recorded and will then appear on online streaming services such as Spotify and iTunes, reports singer Tania Kross in podcast The Voice.

“This opera is a love letter to my culture,” says the well-known opera singer in conversation with Gerja Wolf, presenter of De Stem. Tania, who lives on Curaçao today: “It's a great gift for preserving Curaçao and Antillean music.” Premired eight years ago, the opera is about the slavery past and is the first Papiament opera in Dutch history.

The music tells the story of a triangular relationship between the son of a plantation owner and a slave. They are big friends and fall in love with the same girl. The story is set against the backdrop of slavery and a major slave uprising in Curaçao. The singer prefers not to interact with social debate about the colonial past. “But this opera of reconciliation shows and shows that we carry this history of slavery past together.”

One and a half hour video clip
Tania also reveals that the plans for film shooting around the opera are becoming more concrete. “We're already visiting locations, but first we have audio recordings in September and then the movie — an hour and a half hours of video clip. I really want to make sure that the opera, 200 years later, is and remains a classic.”
