World Obesity Day,
On this day, attention is paid to the large increase in overweight people, especially among children, and the impact that this has on the world. For example, it is estimated that we are moving towards a world where more than half of the people are overweight or obese! The day is also intended to discuss the complexity and misunderstandings surrounding obesity and to break the negative stigmas.
International Women's Day
March 8 is International Women's Day again. A day where we celebrate the achievements of women around the world, but also reflect on the battles that remain to be fought. Indeed, according to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, women produce most of the world's food. All over the world, women in particular are also responsible for eating in a household, for example by cooking and shopping. In doing so, women keep entire households, and therefore the whole world, nourished and healthy!
World Kidney Day
Then we come to Thursday, March 9, World Kidney Day. On this day, attention is drawn to chronic kidney diseases. The biggest causes of chronic kidney disease are high blood pressure and obesity, two things that can be caused by poor diet. High blood pressure, for example, has to do with salt intake. Research on Zoutmaxdag shows that we still consume far too much salt in the Netherlands. Most of the salt is consumed by men between the ages of 31 and 50.
The Week Without Meat
And if all this isn't enough, this week is also the national Week Without Meat. This campaign asks people not to eat meat and dairy for a week. The initiators thus want to promote a flexitarian diet, where meat and dairy are alternated with plant-based alternatives. This is important to reduce the environmental footprint by reducing water use and greenhouse emissions. According to the Week Without Meat, by not eating meat or dairy for a week, you save an average of 834 grams of animal meat, 24 kilos of dairy, 193 liters of water and 80 km of driving.
