De 12-jarige Michael loopt, zoals de mensen in de buurt gewend zijn, in zijn eentje op straat. Hij staat in de wijde omtrek bekend als 'Jacks zoon' en hij heeft het regelmatig aan de stok met klasgenoten, buurkinderen en zelfs met bijna alle volwassenen. Iedereen scheld hem uit en wil zijn gezicht schminken.
